Philly boxing is undergoing a revival after a period of being virtually underground. It hasn’t seen a consistent series since the closing of the legendary Blue Horizon in 2010. Boxing just wasn’t drawing the attention it deserves. Now, new boxing venues such as the Xcite Center at Parx Casino and the Met are giving boxing the opportunity to shine again. It’s something that Philly has been missing for some time since the close of its greatest and most-loved boxing venue.
Boxing at the Xcite Center, Parx Casino
Located in nearby Bensalem, Xcite Center at Parx Casino hosts boxing events and provides a thrilling atmosphere for fight night. Marc Oppenheimer, Parx’s Chief Marketing Officer, says the casino’s relationship with the preeminent and successful boxing promoter, Joe Hand, is working well. Fight cards are selling out at the 1,200-seat Xcite space at Parx Casino. This space features state-of-the-art technology and gives customers a comfortable and top-quality viewing experience.
On March 1st this year, Xcite Fight Night 3 featured old-school Philly cruiserweight Garrett Wilson and Brian Howard as the headliners for the night. On March 2nd, heavyweight champion Zu Anyanwu took on Chris Daukaus in an MMA boxing free-for-all. This was Bensalem’s first Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC).
Oppenheimer has many plans for the future and says the relationship is a win-win for Parx and Hand. They have discussed televised fights and moving from regional to national fights. He would like Parx to be the official home of cage fighting in the area going forward.Parx offers sports betting and boxing fans can place online wagers using the betPARX app.
Boxing at the Met
Live Nation’s The Met held its first match in partnership with Manny Rivera of Hard Hitting Promotions in February 2024. Rivera has been promoting for 18 years and has seen some memorable moments in boxing. He has recently promoted matches at the Fillmore and Sugarhouse. He enthuses that a platform such as his boxing series at the Met will give the sport the cachet to be powerful again.
Rivera says that in the 1930s and 1940s, there was a pride in ranking and the art of the game. He aims to bring back this old-school boxing that doesn’t just focus on business. Fights like Cuevas vs. Ortiz show why Philly is so legendary when it comes to boxing. Spectators could watch these two undefeated lightweight fighters at the top of their game fighting each other.
Boxing at Liacouras Center
The Liacouras Center had one of its busiest years in 2019 with three fight cards. In 2020, junior middleweight champion, Julian Williams, returned home to defend his title but lost to the underdog Jeison Rosario. It was only the 10th boxing show at the center in its 22-year history.
However, at the end of April this year, many of Philly’s biggest-name fighters filled a packed boxing card at Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University. Dominic Walton of Teflon Promotions was the promoter of the event. Walton is a former boxer who wants to help Philly fighters to become thebest boxers ever. Andrew Tabiti, Jesse Hart, Daniel Aduku, and Nikita Ababiy were some of the fighters on the card.
Other venues
There are various other venues in Pennsylvania where it’s possible to watch boxing matches. However, the Xcite Venue and The Met are some of the newer spots that are bringing excitement to watching boxing again. Watching fights at these venues can be a thrilling experience. It’s truly an amazing experience to watch a live match.
